The Bar of Montreal contributes to the protection of the public by providing information and enhancing awareness of rights.  It participates actively in the administration of justice through the Bâtonnier and councillors, who generously devote their time and efforts to the advancement of the profession.

Services

● The Referral Service is to provide means whereby persons, who are able to afford legal services or are admissible to legal aid but do not know a lawyer, may be referred to a member of the Bar who is registered in the Service and who is willing to give a preliminary half-hour consultation for a nominal fixed fee of $30. The service is provided by members of The Bar of Montreal, whose experience covers all phases of legal work. The Referral Service is provided by phone (514-866-24900), by e-mail (reference@barreaudemontreal.qc.ca) and online (www.jurisreference.ca).

● Legal duty counsel service (LDCS) in family matters. A briefing session with duty counsel, lasting up to 30 minutes, is limited to basic legal information. Available on court referral only.

● Service d’Information Juridique à la Cour municipale de Montréal (SIJ) – In criminal and penal matters : Offered exclusively to litigants who are not represented by a lawyer and who are referred by the Court on the day scheduled for a hearing, the SIJ (Service d’information judiciaire) offers ad hoc assistance regarding criminal and penal matters in certain cases that have major impact. This service, which was created by the Young Bar of Montreal (YBM), the Association des avocats de la défense de Montréal (AADM), the Bar of Montreal, Pro Bono Québec and the Municipal Court of Montreal, is designed mainly to improve access to justice and how it is administered. The lawyer on duty may inform the litigant of the general procedure for handling a case at the Municipal Court, and of the nature of the charge, the consequences of pleading guilty, and so forth.
