Legal Information Clinic at McGill (LICM)

Organisation profile

The Legal Information Clinic at McGill (LICM) is a non-profit, student-run, bilingual and free legal information service. Our mandate is to provide legal information, referral and community services to the McGill and Montreal communities, with a continuing commitment to meeting the needs of marginalized groups.

Our volunteers do not provide legal advice; they only provide information.

Services

The Legal Information Clinic at McGill offers a variety of free services to McGill students and members of the community:

The Legal Information at Clinic offers free legal information to its clients. The LICM can answer questions in almost all areas of Québec law; we do NOT take cases involving criminal law, tax law, and construction. The LICM can provide information only, not advice. While it is possible to make an appointment to meet with one of our volunteers in person, people wishing to get information quickly should note that it is faster to proceed by phone than by in-person appointment. Available free of charge. Service provided by phone or in person by appointment.

For issues within the McGill community, Student Advocacy, a proud part of LICM, offers free advice and representation to students accused of a disciplinary offence (such as plagiarism or cheating) or students who feel unjustly treated by the University. We help students find formal and informal solutions to their problems. Available free of charge. Service provided by phone and in person without an appointment.

The LICM offers free legal information sessions to student groups and community organizations through the Just Info program. The LICM can provide presentations in almost all areas of Quebec law, including landlord/tenant law, employment law and family law. We cannot, however, tackle the topics of criminal law, tax law, and construction. If you have any questions concerning the Just Info program, please feel free to contact the Community Services Director by phone or by e-mail. Available free of charge. Phone for details.

The Legal Information Clinic at McGill provides a free Commissioner of Oaths service to members of both the McGill and Montreal communities. There is always a Commissioner available during clinic hours. Full details on their website. Service provided free of charge in person.
