Montreal LGBTQ+ Community Centre

Organisation profile

The Community centre for gay and lesbians of Montreal is a non-profit organization which was established on August 17, 1988. The CCGLM acts to improve the well-being of people in our communities by promoting cooperation and seeking the support of the community and social development by individuals and organizations.

Specifically, the CCGLM aims to offer Montreal’s LGBT community a common gathering place for organizations and individuals interested in improving the experience of homosexual and trans-identified persons through education, information and research. We are targeting the improvement of quality of life for people in our community by providing the tools necessary for the achievement of these goals (establishment of study, research, welcome and information committees).

Services

• The Open Book Library (OBL) is the only specialized documentation center on issues related to sexual diversity in Quebec and one of the largest in French-speaking nations and Canada. With its unique cultural heritage, the OBL plays a crucial role in the preservation and dissemination of Quebec and global LGBT memory. Available to everyone. Since its inception in 1991, this highly specialized documentation center, with its peculiarities and its mission, is an ideal place for those who wish to learn about LGBT realities and their evolution over time. Our collection of over 12,000 records not only boasts documentaries, but also a variety of novels, essays, cartoons, movies and periodicals relating in any way to the realities of our community. Our library will delight lovers of all kinds of works. We also offer the same services found in public libraries, such as reading areas, computers, workbenches, reference books and support to our guests.

• The Centre Communautaire LGBTQ+ also organizes socio-cultural activities for everyone (film and documentary showings, discussions, reading circles, cooking workshops, musical quizzes, museum visits etc.).

• CLl’s mission is to assist in their research those who have legal issues. Under volunteer supervision of two lawyers, a bilingual team of volunteers composed of legal students will take your question in writing by phone or email. We will do the necessary research and inform you of the provisions of the law on your subject and may make suggestions. Available free of charge, from September to April. Please note that the CLI does not provide legal advice and information given by the CLI can in no way substitute for the advice of a professional attorney. By agreeing to use the CLI, you consent to this withdrawal. If you need legal advice, contact an attorney. If you need help finding an attorney, the CLI will be happy to refer you to an attorney sensitive to the special needs of lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transgenders. To contact the CLI, send your question by e-mail at the following address: info@ccglm.org (Please leave us a phone number in your message and we will call you back).

• The centre also provides active support to LGBTQ+ migrants and refugees in their asylum or immigration application process (letters of support, varied resources etc.).
