The Office of the Federal Ombudsman for Victims of Crime (OFOVC) is an independent resource for victims in Canada. The Office was created in 2007 to ensure the federal government meets its responsibilities to victims of crime. In addition to its direct work with victims, the Office also works to ensure that policy makers and other criminal justice personnel are aware of victims’ needs and concerns and to identify important issues and trends that may negatively impact victims.
Services
● Legal information service providing victims of criminal acts with information on their rights as victims. Available free of charge. Service provided by phone and through the website.
● Complaints handling: receiving and processing of complaints from victims of crime against federal departments, agencies or employees, or information on federal laws or policies that apply to victims of crime, or a federal service provided to victims of crime. Available free of charge. To make a complaint, contact the Ombudsman by phone or by e-mail (victimsfirst@ombudsman.gc.ca). Please do not send confidential information by e-mail, because the Ombudsman’s office cannot guarantee that it will be protected.
